Advertorial: ANOVA Showcases its Flex Chute Product Family at IDEF

ANOVA, one of the leading engineering companies of the Turkish defence and aerospace industry, has successfully completed the production of the 7.62×51 mm calibre flex chute. As the latest member of the company’s flex chute product family, the new item is the first output of ANOVA’s localisation and indigenisation projects. Having successfully passed the firing tests conducted last month, the company has now completed its product family of flex chutes covering eight different calibres, ranging from 7.62 mm to 40 mm. Each member of ANOVA’s flex chute product family, including the 7.62×51 mm to be unveiled for the first time, is being exhibited at IDEF.

Work on the design of the flex chute, which were entirely procured from abroad and have occasionally faced export license problems, started in 2012 for the 12.7×99 mm calibre ammunition. Taking joint action with the Mechanical Design Department of ASELSAN’s Defence System Technologies (DST) Business Sector, ANOVA has designed and produced its first product after a one-year study.

During the ongoing process, this study, which started with a single calibre with the support of TUBITAK TEYDEB 1507 and ANOVA’s investments made through its own means, has turned into a product family of eight different calibres in compliance with NATO’s and Russia’s ammunition specifications, as of 2017. As part of the family of flex chute in eight different calibres, five calibres (7.62, 12.7, 25, 30 and 40 mm) have been designed and produced to be in compliance with NATO ammunition specifications. Meanwhile, the remaining part of the product family, embodying 7.62×54 mm, 12.7×108 mm and 14.5×114 mm calibres, have been designed in accordance with Russian ammunition specifications. Unlike the first six products, which had common features, the bodies of the 7.62×51 mm and 40 mm flex chutes are made of composite material that is lighter and more cost-effective than aluminium. The plan for the coming period is to use composite in the previously designed and produced calibres as well.

ASELSAN’s DST Business Sector provided both financial and technical support from the very beginning for the flex chute project, in which the first product with 12.7×99 mm was developed, thus making a valuable contribution to the indigenisation of a product that is critically important for weapons systems. In addition, having ordered over 150 sets between 2013 – when the first product was tested and approved – and early 2017, ASELSAN has also become the most important customer for ANOVA’s product family of flex chutes. This year, the first orders for the 7.62 mm and 40 mm products have also been placed by ASELSAN. Dursun Öner, Design Manager, ANOVA, commented on ASELSAN’s support as follows: “We are grateful to ASELSAN, both for providing financial support through placing orders and for conducting the field tests of our product by installing it on SARP, the most commonly used remote controlled weapon system in our country.”

Meanwhile, Öner shared his views about the product family of flex chutes and IDEF, saying: “At this point, when we have become the provider of flex chutes that are in compliance with the world’s most commonly used calibres, we believe that we have gained a competitive advantage by expanding our product range with the calibres our competitors lack. We have gained both knowledge and experience in these projects and are now ready to utilise them in special projects or any kind of ammunition for which flex chutes have not so far been developed. Our goal is to offer our customers the best product in the most advantageous way. This applies both to our already developed products and all the indigenous products we will develop in the future. We also see IDEF 2017 as a significant milestone in terms of reaching customers in international markets as well. Considering the recent critical process we have experienced, we hope this exhibition will lead to fruitful cooperation projects for our country and for all the companies operating in the Turkish defence and aerospace industry.”

 

Fuel Transfer Pump Comes Next

As a result of its intense work in accordance with the targets set in the Undersecretariat for Defence Industries’ (SSM’s) 2009-2016 Sectoral Strategy Document, ANOVA is focusing on localisation and indigenisation projects where applicable, with an approach that also develops a product family. Another such product by ANOVA is the fuel transfer pump. Well-known for its engineering support for projects developed under the leadership of prime contractors, in line with SSM’s support to R&D projects, ANOVA is also displaying for the first time at IDEF its fuel transfer pump, designed and produced in the context of a Technology Development Liability project.

These pumps are among the fundamental elements of the fuel and cooling systems of vehicles in all platforms. The design and production processes of pumps, particularly of the ones to operate under challenging environment conditions defined by military standards, differ in many aspects from standard pumps. Thus, each pump should be designed and verified specifically to meet the technical requirements of the related system on which it will be used.

ANOVA’s fuel transfer pump design is based on a combination of the company’s technological competence, scientific accumulation, and experience and has successfully passed the development tests. The centrifugal pump, the tests of which are underway in accordance with the MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-461 standards, is capable of operating at a temperature between -35°C and +65°C in compliance with all general aviation fuels. The pump, which does not use any dynamic seal or roller, weighs approximately 1.25 kg, including all mechanical and electronic parts. The plan is to use the product, which has a relatively compact design in terms of its size, in various different applications, especially in air platforms together with its variants that will be developed in the future.
