The Peruvian Ministry of Interior and SpetsTechnoExport, part of Ukroboronprom, have reached an agreement for the procurement of An-178 cargo aircraft. Under the agreement, announced by SpetsTechnoExport on 11 November, an unspecified number of An-178 aircraft, as well as training and after-sales support services, will be provided. The aircraft, which will be used by the National Police of Peru, will replace the An-32B aircraft in the organisation’s inventory.

SpetsTechnoExport won the international competitive tender ahead of two different European competitors. In a statement made by the company, it was claimed that the user’s decision had been based on the performance and the delivery schedule of aircraft, as well as the related training and after-sales support services offered in the bid.

The An-178, which can take off from unpaved runways, can reach speeds of 825 kilometres per hour. It has a maximum cruising altitude of 12.2 kilometres and a range of 5,500 kilometres, and made its first flight in 2015. The configuration ordered by the Peruvian user can carry up to 100 personnel or up to 18 tons of cargo. The aircraft can also be used for the evacuation of injured personnel and for air drop operations.

Antonov’s An-178 design is based on the An-148 and An-158 aircraft. To date, An-178s have performed numerous flights to many countries, including Turkey, for publicity purposes.
