In an October 12 press release, TEI announced the delivery to Baykar of the PD170 turbodiesel aviation engine developed within the scope of the Operative UAV Engine Development Project, in which it was the prime contractor.

Following the delivery, works will be launched to integrate the PD170 engine into a Baykar-made platform with a diesel propulsion system, with a maiden flight with the said engine scheduled for the first half of 2019.

Although the press bulletin made no mention of the platform’s name, it is presumed that the engine is to be used aboard the company’s AKINCI platform.

Developed as part of a contract TEI signed in 2012 with the Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB), the PD170 engine has, since January 2017, generated power for a total duration of more than 3,000 hours. The release said that the engine is the leader in its class with regards to its 170 HP at 20,000 feet altitude, and is one of the best in its class in terms of fuel consumption and power/weight ratio.
